What is the London Marathon?
The London Marathon is an annual running event known for its iconic course that winds its way through the heart of London. It’s one of the most prestigious marathons globally, attracting tens of thousands of participants worldwide.
This year the Marathon celebrates it’s 42nd anniversary and a lot of people are expected to get in the race. For the fun and for the sport.
A Short History of the London Marathon
The first London Marathon took place in 1981 and was the brainchild of former athlete Chris Brasher. Inspired by the success of the New York City Marathon, he envisioned a similar event showcasing London’s landmarks. The race has grown significantly since then, becoming a major fundraising event and a global symbol of running achievement.

Where does the London Marathon take place?
The London Marathon course has remained relatively unchanged since its inception. It starts in leafy Blackheath, winds its way eastward through Greenwich, crosses the River Thames at Tower Bridge, and then loops around iconic landmarks like the Shard before finishing near Buckingham Palace.
When and at what time does the London marathon starts ?
The 2024 TCS London Marathon will take place on Sunday, April 21st, 2024. The exact start time isn’t officially announced yet, but it traditionally begins in the early morning hours, typically around 9:00 am [BST].
Usually though, the answer to the question of what time does the London marathon start can be found out at least a month before the race on the official channels, with only small things that can derail the starting hour.
